Nice to Meet You
My name is Taryn Kalagher. My husband and I have been homeschooling since 2015. We have 5 children, our oldest being 21 and our youngest is 5. I am a US Army Veteran with a bachelor's degree in Psychology and Linguistics that focused on child development and language acquisition. My husband and I started our homeschool journey with a close friend in the living room of their house in Connecticut while we finished our bachelor's degrees. Education has always been important to us, but it doesn't have to be just textbooks. We encourage our children to read, learn, and play to figure out what it is that they want to accomplish in life. We originally started Shield Academy for our family, but it has become something bigger as our family has grown and we now want to share our love and desire to learn with you!
Facts Masters Math

Facts Masters Course
Grades 2-7
Cost: $245/semester
Homework: about 1-2 hours a week
This math course is designed for those that are needing to strengthen their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. These are the basic building blocks for math and will help them to build a firm foundation to accel in later math courses. In addition to math facts, and we will also go over math skills that will include place value, fractions, decimals, geometry, and much more. Students will be grouped together based on level of knowledge.
Middle School Earth Science
Monday and Wednesday 11:00 - 11:50 am
Middle School Earth Science
Grades 7-9
Cost: $245/semester + $95 Supply Fee/year
(Text/workbook are included in supply fee)
Homework: up to 1 hour a week
Earth science will explore the scientific method, ecology, energy, oxygen cycle, rocks and mineral, natural disasters, composition of the earth, atmosphere, climate, solar system, prehistoric earth, fossils, and so much more. Students will have printed text to read; to ensure proper note taking skills, and quizzes, projects and papers will culminate their final grade.

Elementary School Science
Monday and Wednesday 9:00 - 9:50 am
Science Survival
Grades 3-6
Cost: $245/semester + $75 Supply Fee/year
Homework: Optional
(This course will also have optional field trips outside of class time.)
Science Survival will incorporate survival and wilderness skills with all elements of science. We will learn meteorology to understand the appropriate types of shelters to build, herpetology will help differentiate between safe and dangerous snakes and reptiles, botany will show the difference between helpful and harmful plants, zoology will explain predator vs prey and so much more. Come learn the science to survive.
